Linkside Stormwater System Upgraded.

Driving past the Baakens Valley, bordering Carnoustie Crescent in Linkside, motorists might think that they have been transported back in time to the Stone Age town of Bedrock.

The mounds of stone in the bush opposite the Carnoustie dip - at the corner of Carnoustie Crescent and 1st Avenue - is not there to be used to build houses of stone, however, it forms part of a project that will see the upgrading of the stormwater system in the area.

According to DA Ward 7 Councillor, Chris Roberts, it is an extremely labout-intensive project as huge piles of stone are being used to form a cushion-like effect in the two deep ravines below 1st Avenue in Newton Park and Carnoustie Crescent in Linkside, which has been fromed by soil erosion and run-off from heavy rain.

"The stones, which have to be carried to the ravines in wheel barrows and placed by hand, are necessary to slow down water flow and to capture soil which will eventually lead to vegetation re-growth", said Roberts.

"If the situation was left alone, the run-off would eventually have undercut and destroyed any water-based infrastructure in the affected area and possibly silted up sections of the Baakens River."

Robers could not say how long the project will take to be completed.
