Water-distribution

overhaul...

The project is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s upgrading programme.

Ongoing housing developments in Port Elizabeth have placed great strain on the city’s existing water-supply infrastructure in the Motherwell-Chelsea distribution system.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality appointed the local office of Vela VKE Consulting Engineers to prepare designs and documentation for the installation of a new bulk-water pipeline to alleviate the problem.

The new bulk-water pipeline from Motherwell to Perseverance will provide additional capacity between the Motherwell and Azalia service reservoirs to meet demand for existing and new low-cost housing developments up to 2020.

This project is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s upgrading programme and a key part of the Integrated Development Plan aimed at upgrading poor communities; providing free basic water and eradicating bucket sanitation.

Water demand in the area exceeds the combined capacities of a 42-year-old 450mm pipeline and a 37-year-old 750mm pipeline. The pipeline will increase the capacity to, at least 100Ml/day to meet forecast demand.

The project involves the installation of 3,45 km of new 800mm steel pipeline between the Motherwell reservoir and the Uitenhage off-take and 3,55km of new 700mm steel pipeline from the Uitenhage off-take to the Azalia off-take to augment the capacity of the existing 450mm and 750mm pipelines.

The pipelines consist of spiral-welded steel pipe from API 5L X42/SABS 1431 GR300W steel with Sintakote and CML, welded joints with Denso wrapping on external joints, and internal mortar lining. It will b supplied from a 1 100mm pipeline from the Grassridge Reservoir.

The existing 450mm pipeline will be dedicated to the lower pressure Motherwell zone serving Perseverance, Despatch, Redhouse and Azalia townships. This will reduce water loss, energy consumption and maintenance costs.

The new pipeline will add 50 Ml/day capacity to the system and thus provide water for up to 140 000 new and existing housing units within the Motherwell-Chelsea distribution system.
