GLENDORE SAND AND STONE LAND USE POLICY Glendore Sand and Stone is dedicated to the proposition of maintaining a good stewardship over all of its land holdings but, additionally, Glendore Sand and Stone shall attempt to accommodate the needs and desires of its associates while maintaining a vigilant eye to potential legal and environmental risks.
Reclamation & Environmental Commitment
Glendore Sand and Stone’s commitment to the environment includes not only environmental regulatory compliance, but also environmental stewardship that goes above and beyond compliance. Our land management program is an extension of our mining philosophy, of paying attention to the overall ecology and living in harmony as stewards of the land.
Before the mining process begins, site specific reclamation plans are established to preserve the environmental integrity of an area and return the land to its natural beauty and blend it with surrounding ecosystems. Geological and geographic conditions play a dominant role when considering final use of reclaimed land. Reclamation also integrates and is compatible with local and regional land uses, to ensure a synergy with surrounding land uses and local zoning plans for post mining activity.
Wildlife Habitat & Forestry Management
Glendore Sand and Stone is a family owned business with roots back to the last century. Being outdoorsmen, the owners of Glendore Sand and Stone have always held a special regard for the land. This regard provides a foundation for the business. The Environmental and Land Use Policies of the Company verbalize this attitude and the actions of the Company reflect it. Reclamation has always been a practice of the company. And land stewardship is a given, not an extra.
There are two aspects to land management that must be considered. As mining is only one phase in a series of changing land uses over time, reclamation is one way to provide wildlife habitat. However, only a portion of the lands owned and operated on by Glendore Sand and Stone are mined at any one time, and much of the properties never will be mined. Proper management of all of our land holdings is our responsibility. We refer to this as stewardship.
Glendore Sand and Stone has three main mining and processing facilities, and one office facility. Wildlife management plans have been developed for all of these sites. Our main goals are multiple species management and recreational use. Our plans are based around management practices such as:
- Site documentation
- Inventories
- Monitoring and maintenance
- Grassland management
- Nesting habitat
- Forestry management
- Fauna Management
- Food plots
- Wetland restoration and creation
Management plans are developed and implemented by a Team at each location. Environmental organizations are also given the opportunity to have input into our plans. There are many organizations that are involved in wildlife management and Glendore Sand and Stone works cooperatively with many of these organizations for the benefit of the environment, society, and wildlife.
Glendore Sand and Stone has always been actively involved in wildlife management and proper stewardship of our properties. It is this closely-held regard for the land and the cooperative approach to land management that has helped us develop strong and positive relationships with environmental groups and other organizations. The result of our cooperative efforts is the benefit to the environment and wildlife.
Forestry Management
Good Forestry Management is Good Wildlife Management.
Because it is necessary to remove vegetation during the mining process, Glendore Sand and Stone feels it necessary to replenish the resource. So as a result, we go beyond the basic regulatory requirement and plant many trees every year on reclaimed mine land
In addition, to re-forestation of mined lands, we also maintain the non-mining portions of our land holdings which results in improved wildlife habitat. The resulting landform is a mosaic of diverse age classes and habitat types.
Wetland Enhancement
Glendore Sand and Stone is continually striving to enhance the ecological value of there land holdings. At the Amanzi Quarry, we had a project whereby we filled an existing pond that had steep banks and little shoreline area and replace it with an enhanced pond stemming off the existing ditch to the north. The new pond was constructed with uneven and rolling bottom and an irregular shoreline to enhance the habitat for waterfowl. In addition, we created some ditch plugs to isolate existing pond structures and ensure the surface water would infiltrate through the wetland.
